With the Pre-Season friendly with Oldham Athletic to play on Saturday afternoon Blackburn Rovers named basically an Under-21 side in a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers on Friday evening.

However, Gary Bowyer was left impressed with what he saw from the youngsters.

New signing Sacha Petshi started along with Liam Nolan, who first started his trial when Petshi did and remains with a chance of getting something from Rovers (unlike Giles Coke and Dean Furman who’ve since moved on.) Jeffrey Sarpong and Maic Sema also played a part.

Bowyer told The Official Blackburn Rovers Website with the Oldham match coming up (and some injuries to worry about) he couldn’t risk too many first team players being involved.

He said those that were involved benefited though: “I think we had a very good work-out.

“We had some injuries on Thursday and Friday and we didn’t want to risk the players, so we decided to come with a very youthful side here but we knew it would be a great test for them against a very good Tranmere team.

It’ll (as GB says) have done the other GB’s (Gary Brabin’s) boys some good and give them something of a taste to come as we’ll possibly be looking to dip into the Under-21 squad this season to make up the number, however, only if the players are ready!!

The trialists also impressed, GB added: “I’m delighted for them because there were a couple of trialist boys playing, the rest were all under 21 and I thought they applied themselves very well and towards the end they showed signs of dominating it.

A full ninety minutes (his first for Rovers) for new signing Petshi was also a bonus from the win at Prenton Park.

The Frenchman day by day is getting stronger with the Rovers Manager finishing by saying: “I was pleased with Sacha, to get 90 minutes under his belt was really good and he showed signs that he’s getting stronger and better, and he has done ever since he’s been with us, day by day.

“He still needs a proper pre-season but he’s getting stronger.

With the need for GB to pluck out more rough diamonds Sarpong and Sema playing not only saw them needing to impress but prove (quickly) they can offer us something and it seems they did as he’s since told The Lancashire Telegraph he felt they did well so it’ll leave him with another decision to make.

Sarpong (helped by a deflection) was the one to open the scoring with Connor Mahoney, one of those that came on to replace Sarpong and Sema (who made way after the formers goal), adding the second. Swedish trialist (we’ve had some good Swede’s at Ewood Park over the years) Sema would’ve scored too but the forward’s header beat Tranmere goalkeeper Scott Davies but not the crossbar.
