Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce was delighted with a well earned three points after the 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

The points collected since Allardyce’s appointment have clawed us towards safety, so as well as being delighted with the win at Ewood Park itself (thanks to goals from Benni McCarthy and Ryan Nelsen which took us even closer to this) he pointed out what this form would’ve meant had this been in keeping with the season as a whole.

Allardyce told Sky Sports: “It’s a well earned three points at both ends today – some heroic defending and goalkeeping and then we had some quality balls in the box and put them under pressure.

“We didn’t have the goalscorers available but we got the goals we needed.

“It was a great result, even though at times it was a little fraught in terms of our defending, but we got it right and it’s a fantastic win for us.

“We’ve been clawing ourselves out ever since I came here. That’s 24 points from 17 games now. In equation terms if you got that over the season that’s a top-half finish.

Big Sam highlighted Paul Robinson (who made some superb saves to keep us ahead) and Christopher Samba’s (after he was once again selected as a make-shift striker) contributions but more importantly believes that one more win should ensure our Premier League survival.

He added: “Yes I think so now. It’s been a long battle out of the bottom-three first, now we’ve got ourselves clear of it in the last few weeks, now we’ve put ourselves that bit clearer with less games to go.

“I’m really pleased for the boys today and for the fans because it has been a fantastic day for us.
