Blackburn Rovers have been interested in signing Ruud Van Nistelrooy but Sam Allardyce has admitted defeat in his possible attempts to sign him.

The 33-year-old is someone that Allardyce wanted to bring to Ewood Park and with further star names signing for Real Madrid this summer the Dutch striker’s going to find it hard to get into the Real Madrid side so this gave Rovers hope. However, Big Sam admits we probably couldn’t afford him and with Van Nistelrooy also out until September Rovers also couldn’t afford to wait for him to get fit.

Allardyce told Sky Sports: “I think probably Ruud, from a salary point of view, is out of our reach.

“And I think he is not going to be fit until September, so that is not going to be what we are looking for at the moment.

“We need someone right now who can join up with the squad as soon as we can.

Personally I think it’s a shame as the former Manchester United striker would’ve made a superb signing for Rovers and given everyone a lift, but it was always a long shot anyway.
