Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce bemoaned the fact that Rovers failed to threaten Stoke City’s goal enough during the 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

Rovers didn’t threaten Steve Sorensen in the Stoke goal enough and Allardyce puts this down to the injuries that we have suffered in key areas, most notably in the striking areas. Allardyce was able to name Benni McCarthy and El Hadji Diouf but didn’t think that their pairing got the best out of them as the qualities they need around them were lacking.

Allardyce told Sky Sports: “We’ve got Benni (McCarthy) and (El-Hadji) Diouf obviously, but Diouf doesn’t play up there that much and Benni always needs the bigger man with him, whether that’s a Jason (Roberts) or a Roque (Santa Cruz).

“We haven’t got them and we have to deal with that and make sure we overcome those problems and produce a performance that can win next week.

Before the defeat at the Britannia Stadium recent Rovers defeats had been against sides in the higher reaches of the Premier League, so weren’t anywhere near as terminal as the Stoke defeat might be and Big Sam knew this, but he also knows that we now MUST get those all important wins as we enter the final matches of the season.

He added: ““We are disappointed but it’s the first time we’ve lost to anybody around us since I’ve been here.

All the four defeats prior to this were against the top five sides and we’ve got to make sure on Sunday we go all out for those three points and deal with the pressure that comes our way.

“We need to produce a performance under that pressure and try to get that all-important win.

We still have our own destiny in our own hands, however, defeats against sides also battling against relegation could really hurt us when all is said and done!!!

  • Not what we asked for but the Boro and Newcastle results have bailed us out big time… we need Jason roberts back straight away.

  • Dunn and Grella were deemed not ready for a full 90/ Diouf and Morten were the creators, the problem was Benni up front on his own in my eyes…

  • i think roberts is the biggest loss. we really needed someone to hold up the ball and keep possession. that being said, its pointless without another striker/finishing midfielder and big sam is not keen to play two up front away from home

  • I think that Roberts has been the biggest miss, it shows that Santa Cruz may not be missed as much as others may expect at Rovers that everyone has called for Jason to be in the team ahead of him…. It shows in the summer that ( with the money for Cruz and a couple of others ) we have to rebuild the team, the fact that we have to play a weakened midfield at THE most important part of the season is testiment to this, against Liverpool, due to inj I think we had 6 players who are or could play centre back on the team – this tells a story about our strength in depth should key players get injured and b4 anyone mentions it I know we have no money, but Sam has shown to be as cute as Hughes ( if not better ) at picking up decent players and making them play better than they are rated…..

  • very true clint… we need some surgery this summer. However I am a strong believer that when Roberts plays – McCarthy plays better by default.

  • Yeah thats true, Benni I think is a man on borrowed with Sam, he could be one of the early victims in the summer, but its true he does play better with Roberts, basically Jason punches big holes in the defence and Benni has enough guile to use it. Its clear that we have a good squad when fit, but when we lose a couple of players the quality is not there to fill it, its hard for a team like Rovers to get good enough players that are happy to sit on the bench – this goes without saying, both internationals and young players who can play regular at a lower level – but we need some of Sam’s wheeling and dealing, just as he did with Bolton….
