Benni McCarthy admits he’s putting his Blackburn Rovers future on the line by committing himself to South Africa’s African Nations Cup campaign in January.

Both he and Aaron Mokoena will be absent for up to a month as both will represent South Africa in the competition to take place in January.

Many other clubs from the Premier League will suffer from losing players to the competition… some more than others.

‘It often jeopardises the career of a player, but everyone wants to represent their country,’ Rovers top goalscorer said, speaking to skysports.co.uk.

One major bonus for Rovers is that Congo didn’t qualify for the finals so the massive Christopher Samba will not be absent.

Mikey.

  • You can understand him wanting to play can’t you, I just wish that the African Cup of Nations could be played at a different time though!
It will give others a chance, but I doubt very much that Sparky (or anyone at Rovers) will hold this against him.

  • I am proud when our players play international football – I agree with the timing thou – I think I heard a while back that this will be the last time it is played during the domestic season… (don’t quote me on that!)

  • so you guys lose a few main players also! we lose essien, drogba, and mikel and kalou! altho kalou cant score at the mo! but the timing is awful, why it cant be held dring the off season i’ll never know-absolute madness

  • I guess its just one of those things. It cant be helped. We will miss Benni during this period but surely Roberts and Derbs should value their chance and provide more than adequate cover.???

  • Smokiejack – unfortunately we don’t have a big a squad as you with strength in depth. So McCarthy away for a month is a massive loss. Mikey totally agree about Derbs – great opportunity for him to shine

  • If you remember as well Derbs didnt really come on the radar till Jan anyway…. so he has the patience and he’ll need it… but we all know what he can do.

  • difficult for the guy…you can see both sides of the argument…I take it that you do not pay his wages whilst he is gone for a month ??????????

  • Agree with the lads above, no way should the African Nations be played midway through league campaign’s in Europe. McCarthy will be a big loss and my only hope is that he does’nt come back injured!
Are Derbs & Roberts up to stepping into his shoes while he’s away. I remain to be convinced, but lets hope so eh!

  • I think both have proved what valuable assets they are when needed. Derbs has never let anyone down where as Roberts has (when not injured) been the figure head of our attacks. Some dont like him but that doesnt matter.

  • i reckon us teams that are affected should refuse to release these players – let’s pretend they’re injured 🙂 don’t laugh, Fergie’s done it for years at Old Trafford!

  • great chance for derbs or rigters, think either would suit playing with santa. with reidy coming back we should be able to cover any suspensions in the midfield.

  • lol spot on merlin, but i wouldnt be too happy if emerton was not released for Australia, or you guys if bentley does get a chance

  • It may be a good chance for some fringe players to come through. However, I would prefer to be playing with McCarthy and Cruz up front. The fringe players may not be fully match fit, and take a few games to get there. When they get match fit, McCarthy and The Axe (or The Binman (did that name ever catch on…?)) will be back, after playing, and hopefully winning, the African Cup of Nations. On a different matter, would they not need resting for a couple of weeks after the tournament. Brettski had time off when he was on duty for Australia…?

  • It’s just one of those things isn’t it, clubs know when they sign players what will happen when this competition comes round (even though Benni was AGAIN in International retirement for the hundreth time at that point in time lol!) so it’s just the price you have to pay.

  • Santa is the spearhead of our attack, particularly due to the style we now adopt so it will give maceo, derbs and roberts a great chance, plus gally will be back. I fancy derbs to really stake a claim for a place duing this period.
