Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy has agreed a new contract to stay at Ewood Park until 2011. Nothing official has been confirmed, but these are the reports emanating from Skysports.com

The South African International hasn’t had anywhere near the impact on Rovers’ season this term as he did in the last (when he bagged 24 goals) but he has still managed double figures in a season when he has struggled more often than not. However, he has started shown signs of being the McCarthy that we want to see in the past few months.

Personally I believe that tying him down to a long-term contract is a VERY GOOD thing, he might have been indifferent this season but his quality has been proven over the years and you DON’T become a bad player overnight. Hopefully with this contract sorted out (all that is needed is the formality of a fresh work permit being successfully granted) we can now see the McCarthy that we all know and love.

Signing a contract until 2011 is a BIG commitment (which will hopefully be officially confirmed soon?!?!), but it shows the commitment that he (and hopefully others) are willing to make to Rovers, as he can see that Mark Hughes is moulding a squad into something that is capable of going places.

  • This IS (when fully officially confirmed) a good thing dudes (but I think I’ve made this obvious though lol!!!)

  • Its does sound good and apparently he had a £5.7 million release clause in his contract, if this is true then its good we’ve tied him down to a new contract because in the current climate of football transfers that woudn’t buy us anywhere near a player of his class (when he is on form of course)

  • I think this could be a bad move. He has been poor for the best part of this season and rewarding him is not justified.

I would not be surprised if he carries on his poor form while milking Rovers for the next 4 years, by which time he’ll be 34 (I believe).

BTW, heard anything about this Manure player – Lampkin – one site suggested that Hughesy is lining him up.

  • This should clear any doubts in Benni’s mind. I think he will be lucky to dislodge JRob this season but next season hopefully we will reap the dividends coz as HDM said.. you dont become a bad player overnight.

  • Yeah, I’m pleased first of all but surprised at the length of the contract. I just hope he repays us and starts scoring again. I think he will start against Liverpool so I hope he continues his good scoring record against them!
