Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy has agreed a new contract to stay at Ewood Park until 2011. Nothing official has been confirmed, but these are the reports emanating from Skysports.com

The South African International hasn’t had anywhere near the impact on Rovers’ season this term as he did in the last (when he bagged 24 goals) but he has still managed double figures in a season when he has struggled more often than not. However, he has started shown signs of being the McCarthy that we want to see in the past few months.

Personally I believe that tying him down to a long-term contract is a VERY GOOD thing, he might have been indifferent this season but his quality has been proven over the years and you DON’T become a bad player overnight. Hopefully with this contract sorted out (all that is needed is the formality of a fresh work permit being successfully granted) we can now see the McCarthy that we all know and love.

Signing a contract until 2011 is a BIG commitment (which will hopefully be officially confirmed soon?!?!), but it shows the commitment that he (and hopefully others) are willing to make to Rovers, as he can see that Mark Hughes is moulding a squad into something that is capable of going places.
