Benni Hails The Spirit

Benni McCarthy believes the atmosphere in the Blackburn dressing room is a key factor behind the club’s impressive form this season.

Mark Hughes’ side are unbeaten in four Premier League games and have also progressed to the first round of the Uefa Cup.

McCarthy, who got off the mark on Sunday as far as Premier League goals are concerned, thinks the team’s morale and togetherness are the primary reason why Rovers are doings so well.

He told Radio Rovers: ‘There is no jealousy here – the players compliment each other.

‘We have clean air, there is a lot of banter and that is great.’

The victory over City lifted Blackburn up to 7th in the table and with a game in hand on several teams above there is room to get even higher. McCarthy added: ‘It is great credit to the lads and great credit to everyone who played a part.

‘We stood our ground, worked hard and got three points. Now we are back in the top half of the pack again.’

And the South African striker knows he will have to remain at his best to retain his place in Hughes’ starting XI.

McCarthy was Rovers’ top scorer last season with 24 goals, but he knows that won’t guarantee a start every week, especially with the summer signing of Paraguay international Roque Santa Cruz.

He said: ‘We have got great players here now and it is far more difficult to get in the first XI.

‘People love winners, nobody loves a loser.

‘Whether you score or not, if your team is winning it is great.

‘As long as I am playing I am happy.’

Mikey’s Thoughts

I for one must say I am pleased Benni has settled down again after much specualtion about him wanting away in the summer.

He may still want to move but as long as his attitude and proffessionalism stay in tact then that is all that is important.

Its clear he wants to play for Rovers, score goals and help others around him. I must also say his reaction when subbed the other day was first class.

Lets see more of it Benni.
