Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy has been ruled out of the UEFA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round 1st leg match with MyPa on Thursday Evening.

The South African passed out before being taken away to hospital after a knock to the head in the victory over Middlesbrough at the weekend. However, he was released later that day having suffered concussion, nothing more. He has been assessed by the Rovers medical team all week since, but with the match in Finland just a few days away he is not quite ready so will not be risked (and RIGHTLY so!)

It is not yet known whether or not he will be available to face Arsenal at Ewood Park in the Premiership on Sunday, but Rovers Manager Mark Hughes is hopeful the he will be able to return to training later this week, therefore be able to take part in that fixture.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “Benni has been checked over once again after the injury that he had at the weekend.

“At the time it looked very worrying, but in fairness he was able to come back with us after the game and he’s been obviously in to be checked over again and he’s okay.

“But the feeling is that the game against MyPa is too soon for him after the impact. He got a bang on the temple and it obviously shook him up.

“He is going to train hopefully towards the end of the week and as long as he comes through that then he’ll be an option.
