Reports are surfacing that the melee after the final whistle in Poland was caused by Rovers` Benni McCarthy after it was reported he was racially abused throughout the match in Krakow.

Mark Hughes told Skysports afterwards:

Benni was upset because a number of comments were made to him during the game, they were of a racist nature.

Reports claim that McCarthy squared up to Serbian defender Nikola Miailovic after the final whistle because of constant abuse. It was clear to see that something had upset the Rovers players as they all got involved in scenes that threatened to tarnish Rovers` excellent performance.

Blackburn will now by contacting UEFA regarding this matter. Hughes went on to say:

We will speak to UEFA and make it clear to them who we think was involved. I will speak to a UEFA delegate at some stage to make our point.

Krakow are not adverse to violence and controversy as they are often embroiled in a bitter dispute with neighbouring side Cracovia. Allegedly there is a strong conflict between fans on both sides that has its derivatives in the Second World War and Cold War sentiments.

It comes as a blow UEFA who are this week advocating the removal of racism in football.
