Vital Blackburn’s most recent Poll asked you “After Lucas Neill’s Missed Penalty Who Do You Feel Should Step Up?” You voted overwhelmingly in favour of Benni McCarthy being handed the responsibility.

69% of you felt that the South African striker, who appeared to want to take the last one before Lucas Neill decided as captain he should take the kick, should be handed the responsibility of taking future spot kicks following Neill’s miss from twelve yards against Sheffield United.

Some of you would prefer to see Neill himself again stepping up again, 13% of you would vote for the Australian. Republic of Ireland International Steven Reid, who is no stranger to penalties himself with 8%, would be next.

A man who I thought would maybe get a larger share of the vote having had penalty taking history behind him would be Robbie Savage, who only gained 5%. Jason Roberts, currently out injured would surprisingly pick up a mere 1%, maybe this injury has something to do with this low vote?

4% of you went for the “other” option, which would include the rest of the squad, with Morten Gamst Pedersen likely to be the most sought after other taker. The reason he wouldn’t be on the initial list would be because you only get six options with polls, and the names mentioned I felt were more likely to be penalty takers than Gamst.

Gamst takes a mean free kick, one of the very best out there but personally I see him as a bit of a Beckham character, wonderful, world-class even with free kick but potential a little suspect from the spot, which Beckham is, and I feel Gamst could be likewise?

As crazy as it may sound it’s a lot easier to take a shot from twenty odd yards with a wall in front of you than it is twelve yards with only the goalkeeper. Penalty taking, much like free-kick taking is an art, and being able to successfully do both is something few players can do.

So in summary
Benni McCarthy – 69%
Steven Reid – 8%
Jason Roberts – 1%
Robbie Savage – 5%
Other – 4%
or Lucas Neill again… – 13%

The current poll, recently suggested to me by Vital Blackburn member Simon Garner Legend is asking, “Is Andy Todd A 1st Team Player In Light Of Early Season Performances?

As for what you think, cast your vote, and why not have your say on the latest polls findings…
