Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley has admitted that he is feeling the benefits of his decision to withdraw from the England Under-21’s in the summer, so again he is backing this decision.

We have covered the ground on Bentley’s decision to withdraw from the England squad for the European Under-21 Championships time after time, some agreed with it, others didn’t but I would suggest that most have now agreed to at least disagree on this matter!!! However, Bents is still standing by this decision and he believes that he is reaping the benefits of this.

Bentley told the Daily Express: “I only made the decision I made for the benefit of my football career. By making that decision, I wanted to make sure I was in the best condition possible to play in the Premier League or the highest level.

“And I’m feeling fit. That is what you want at this stage of the season – to be fresh and fit
.”

As well as this Bents also offered his opinion on FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s plans to limit the number of foreign players each team can have (you may have seen this on Football Focus on Saturday lunchtime?!?!), something that he is opposed too as he believes that the overseas players that have come into the English game have benefited it.

He added: “You hear people moaning about the detriment of foreign players to the English game.

“But all the players coming in has made it better. It has made the level of performances better, so English players are better footballers.

“You don’t want 100 average English players in the Premier League, you want 30 brilliant ones. I believe the talent has gone up and I am part of that
.”

As an Englishman I want to see what is best for England, so long as the overseas infiltration doesn’t become detrimental to this (which personally I don’t think it is!) then I’m happy with how things are.
