Bentley Shines For England

Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley shone on his first start for England on Wednesday evening.

Bentley was handed his first International start for his country by Fabio Capello in the 2-1 win over Switzerland, and despite some newspapers failing to appreciate how well he played (mentioning no names, the Daily Mail!!!) the general thought is that he was one of, if not the star performer for England (probably Wayne Rooney aside, however, the fans Man of the Match Award went to Steven Gerrard). If John Motson, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Hansen, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright can all single you out then you can’t have done bad!!!

For a while it looked as though Bents (and England as a whole) might not deliver, but both did enough in the end to suggest that things could be promising. There were chants of “there’s only one David Beckham” which were not only aimed at Capello but also Bents after he put a wayward cross into the stands. However, he played some glorious passes, one in particular put Rooney free but his control let him down. A few more showings like this bright start and although Beckham WILL NOT and SHOULD NOT be forgotten people will soon start to appreciate the quality that Bents does have.
