Bentley Targeting England Place

Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley feels that he can get into the England squad; but feels that playing for Rovers might not gain Steve McLaren’s attention.

Following another superb goal; the winning goal against Reading last weekend there have been many calls for Bentley to perhaps be given his chance in the senior England squad.

Bentley has been in fine form for Rovers since his permanent switch to the club from Arsenal in January 2006, his opening months of this season were among the best I’ve seen from him although in truth he had gone off the boil for a while in recent times, but in all fairness many had.

Until the time comes that McLaren feels Bentley is ready for England inclusion (should this come?) Bentley just wants to remain focused and concentrate on his club form, he said:

Perhaps you have to do more when you are at a club like Blackburn where the media focus is not so strong.

When I scored a hat-trick against Manchester United last season, I suppose I got noticed because of who we were playing against, and the goal I got against Reading last week got some attention because I went on such a long run before my shot.

I know if I keep knocking on the door, the rewards will eventually come.

One thing is I am playing regular football now and because of that my game is improving all the time.

I believe I could do a job for England, but it’s no use talking about it – you can fall flat on your face like that. You have to show you are worth a place and see how it goes from there.

If the manager sees potential, I’m sure he will give me a chance.”

Whether on not Bentley will be given his chance by McLaren remains to be seen but should he continue performing for Rovers it will become harder for him to ignore him Rovers player on not?
