With Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side racking up eleven straight wins in the Premier League in the first half of the 2016/17 campaign so far to lift them into top spot in the top flight table, here are the best winning streaks since the inception of the rebranded Premier League.
With the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool still to be played tonight at Goodison Park in front of the Sky Sports television cameras, Chelsea sit seven points clear in top spot and are many people’s favourites for the crown this campaign.
Eleven wins on the spin has been achieved before though in Premier League history, last by Liverpool in the 2013/14 campaign but that did not take them to the title as they were pipped by Manchester City and finished in second place.
So does a season best winning streak bring home the title?
With thanks to Talksport for doing the legwork here (and the usual caveat of errors are their own unless it was my fat fingers when typing) the below table lists the best winning streaks in each season and where that streak helped put the relevant club.
As you can see the best winning streak helps you towards the Championship finishing spot, but it’s by no means a foregone conclusion to being crowned Champions.
For the history buffs and a bit of nostalgia, a special mention for Wimbledon’s appearance in this table.
