Blackburn’s FA Cup bid, and therefore – to be harshly truthful! – season, ended on Wednesday with Liverpool doing enough to see out the ΒΌ final win to set up a semi final meeting with Aston Villa.

The game remained goalless until 20-minutes from time and then Liverpool struck the decisive blow to win one-nil at Ewood Park and leave on the ‘fairytale ending’ of an FA Cup final win to Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool career….

Sakho was being caused problems in the Liverpool defence early on, nothing short of a standard ‘punt forward’ almost saw him let in Conway but the defender recovered his mistake to get back but ahead of injury forcing him off Rhodes lost him, he was his marker, but couldn’t hit the target with a header.

Perhaps, as you would have expected, Liverpool had the possession but didn’t do too much with it in the first half with the returning Eastwood, playing in the FA Cup as he had throughout, turning the only real effort of note from Coutinho away.

Once again, as in the original tie at Anfield, Liverpool had their own ‘keeper Mignolet to thank as he pulled off two fine saves in the second half as we came out and went at Liverpool a little more sensing we could get sometime. Firstly he kept out a Cairney drive and then turned away a Marshall header.

Those saves perhaps proved the turning point in this tie?

Gestede was only fit enough to come on from the bench for the final half an hour of so but when he arrived that sense of optimism grew even further and instantly he linked up with Rhodes but no goal could be found and soon after as he had, to beat rivals Bolton late on in a 4th round replay, Coutinho (70) proved the match winner again.

A one-two with Henderson gave Coutinho the opportunity and he fired low past Eastwood who had no chance, with it almost Eastwood who nearly dramatically forced extra time when he was sent up as a last throw of the dice – having controlled and turned his effort, fine skills shown by a ‘keeper, was kept out by opposite number Mignolet and the dream was over….
