David Raya has signed a new contract with Blackburn to keep him at the club.

This extension will take the 21 year old – who has made 10 appearances for Rovers since he arrived from Spanish club Cornella in 2012 – through until 2019.

Having penned his new deal the keeper told the Official Website that he feels at home with Blackburn and is looking to stay as long as possible.

‘It feels great. It’s a chance to carry on at this great club. I’ve been here for five years and it’s a chance to grow up further as a footballer and as a person, so I’m really pleased with it. The club gave me the chance to start my career here, so I just want to stay for as long as possible and repay all the support that I’ve had from the club. I’m obviously very happy here. I’ve been here since I was 16 and it feels like home.’

He admitted to be a little frustrated at not playing as much as he would have wanted but will keep working hard in training in the hope of getting his chance under Tony Mowbray in the future.

The man keeping him out of the side at the moment is Jason Steele with the competition for places between the two healthy. Raya said this is pushing each other.

‘That’s the good thing, me and Jason work hard every day and we’re pushing each other. I’m trying to push him and trying to get his spot. I always try to work as hard as possible and doing that, I think it makes Steeley work even harder not to lose his place. He’s been playing well ever since he came, he’s a really good goalkeeper and I’ve learnt a lot from him and it’s good to have that competition between two goalies.’

Raya’s still young – especially for a keeper – so finished by saying he knows his time will come.

‘I’m just waiting for my chance to show the new manager what I can do and then we’ll see if I can stay in the team. I’m still young, I’ve got a lot of years ahead of me hopefully. I’m only 21, so I’m just waiting for my chance and we’ll see what happens. I just need to keep training and keep doing the right things and try to push him that little bit harder.’
