The rumoured interest in David Bentley from Manchester United will prompt Blackburn Rovers chiefs to offer the inform winger an improved and increased contract.

The England under-21 star has (as I said in an earlier article) been a revelation since arriving in Lancashire, in particular this season which has lead to newspaper speculation that United could be preparing an offer. Mark Hughes has denied any bids have been made but has confirmed extending Bentley’s contract, which still has two-years to run is something the club are looking to do; he said:

I am not aware of any bids for David, but he has done very well for us this season and I am looking to improve with his current situation.

He is a young player with a lot of talent and has just got to keep going now.

But I think he knows that we’re the right place for him at this time in his career and I enjoy working with him.”

It’s amazing what a bit of gossip can do to prompt a club into taking steps to “convince” you not to leave. I may be very cynical but in a day and age when agents seem to be out for all they can it wouldn’t surprise me if Bentley’s people had themselves fabricated such stories to make this happen! What is a contract really worth though? Just because Bentley doubles his wage (as is again being speculated) does this really mean he’ll see it through?
