Blackburn’s Cup exit not a Surprise

Most who voted in a recent Vital Blackburn pole asking how far Blackburn Rovers were likely to go in this season Carling Cup were proved right on Wednesday night.

55% of the people who did vote felt a third round exit was likely and so it proved following Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Ewood Park.

So we are left to reflect on what might have been as we now turn our attentions to finishing in the top six once again in the Premiership, building on our impressive start to the UEFA Cup campaign and also starting our FA Cup bid early next year.

Although to a degree we had nothing to lose I’m disappointed myself that Rovers have made the early exit as although Chelsea are a fantastic team and maybe the League Cup isn’t a competition everyone likes I’m of the opinion it is better to see some silverware in the trophy cabinet than none at all. Also you have to look at it this way the League Cup does give you this route into Europe which is essential for Rovers again next season.

Chelsea’s win didn’t come easy for them though so we can take pride from that, with them even having some degree of fortune, with this again against us! Mark Hughes felt there was a handball in the build up to Chelsea’s second goal saying:

We are a little bit disappointed as we tried to highlight it to the officials. But they obviously did not see it or they would have given it.

We were just trying to find our shape and unfortunately for us the ball ends up in the back of our net.”

It wasn’t a good Carling Cup night all round really for those connected to Blackburn. Whilst Chelsea were dumping us out of the competition our youngster Andy Taylor, currently on loan at Crewe Alexandra was facing Manchester United.

The defender, playing the second game of his loan spell had to be removed having sustained a blow to the head that required four stitches. It must be said though that Taylor, much like the Crewe side in general did have a good game though. The reserve captain looked impressive not only defending but also coming forward from his left-back position.
