Blackburn Rovers defender Andre Ooijer not only represented Holland on Wednesday evening but he also captained them in their 1-1 draw with England in the friendly in Amsterdam.

Before the match the vastly experienced 32-year-old had spoken about how much he was looking forward to the challenge of not only coming up against England, but also the potential task of keeping Wayne Rooney quiet. Ooijer had said:

Wayne Rooney is a good player but it is not all about one man. You play against 11 players and all 11 of the England team are magnificent.

I am looking forward to the game. It is always an honour to play for your country and it is good for Holland to play a team like England.”

For the most part Ooijer and his Dutch team mates did keep Rooney and company quiet in a largely non-entertaining game in the Amsterdam ArenA that ended 1-1. Rooney had given England the lead but they were denied the win they just about deserved four minutes from time.

As far as I’m aware (and I may well be wrong) this is the first time Ooijer has captained his country? He lasted 83 minutes before being sacrificed as the Dutch threw on an extra forward.
