Tony Mowbray has signed nine players this summer but the Blackburn boss is still hopeful of bringing in further fresh faces ahead of the transfer deadline.

Rovers, obviously like all clubs, have until 11pm on Thursday to conclude any deals.

Mowbray wants to work with a small squad but not quite as small as the one he’s currently dealing with. However, he’ll not sign players for the sake of signing them as the boss knows he can always turn to the U23 side to give the clubs’ own youngster a chance.

He told the Official Website: ‘The numbers are still quite small, but I only want to bring in the right players. In my opinion, you don’t bring players in just to fill numbers up. If you can’t find the ones that you really like and think can help your starting XI, you’d rather give your own Under-23s an opportunity.’

Talks are taking place with various clubs but these deals could depend on business they are able to conduct, leading to a ‘domino effect’ which could leave Blackburn awaiting deals until the last minute tomorrow.

Another two, ideally three, players are targeted though.

‘We’re looking hard, we’re working hard, we’re having some conversations with different managers about some of their players and a lot of these things depend on what they get in before they let out, so it’s a bit of a domino effect and that’s why, generally, they go quite late in the day,’ said Mowbray.

Adding: ‘So somebody does some business, which allows this player to leave and he moves, which allows this player to leave. So we’ll have to wait, but I would hope that we’ll bring at least two in any maybe three.’

One of these could be Motherwell’s Ben Heneghan, according to the BBC.

The BBC said: ‘Motherwell have received an approach from Blackburn Rovers for Ben Heneghan and the clubs are in negotiations about the central defender’s future.’

Heneghan, 23, has impressed at the Scottish Premiership side since joining them from Chester last summer but has so far rejected a contract extension at Motherwell, where he’s under contract until the end of the season.
