Bowyer: The Players Were Excellent

A Blackburn Rovers reaction was desperately needed at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon against Charlton Athletic. And we got it!!

Back to back defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford had seen us lose some ground on the Championship play-off pack so it was important that we went into Christmas (and all the matches that’ll bring) on a high, which we did with the 2-0 win over Charlton.

Rovers were on the front foot in a first half that “we were dominant” in and controlled from the off, Bowyer’s only negative was that we didn’t get more than the two goals in it that we did.

Bowyer told Radio Rovers: “The players were excellent. They came out fighting.

“The manner of the first half performance, our pressing game was excellent. We get the first goal and we could have scored before that.

“I think the only negative of the first half was that we only scored twice, were excellent, we were dominant.

Jordan Rhodes was not only back in the starting XI (after starting on the substitutes bench against Brentford) he was back in the goals as his first half double secured us the points with his (and Rudy Gestede’s) contribution.

Cleansheets, not keeping enough of them, keep troubling us so to get one on Saturday was one of the main things for the Rovers manager who now feels we’ve been set up nicely for Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

Adding: “We’ve said all along that we’ve got goals in the team but more importantly today we got the clean sheet – we’ve been desperate for that.

“It sets us up nicely for a local derby against Bolton on Boxing Day.

This was a big win for us, a run of poor results could’ve quickly snowballed (no Christmas pun intended!!) out of control but we’ve responded well now to take this into the Bolton match!!
