Brett Emerton has issued something of a battle cry ahead of the Wednesday night Carling Cup match against league leaders Chelsea at Ewood Park.

Whilst Brett acknowledges the difficulty of the challenge, he insists Rovers won’t be overran like the last time we played Chelsea.

Brett, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph said – “Definitely, everyone realises the importance of Wednesday`s game.

‘If we can get a positive result there, excitement will build and the players will start to believe we can win something.

“Some of our cup runs have been very enjoyable. We`d love to go on another one again.

“To get to Wembley would be something special. I`ve had a couple of semi finals but you`re in football to win things and hopefully this is our chance.

“I don`t think we`ll need to mention that defeat (5-0 at Stamford Bridge) in the changing rooms.

‘It`s still fresh in our minds and we must not let it happen again.’

Whilst Emerton accepts the Rovers are far from favourites, he has pointed to a good run of results at home base as the key to perhaps springing a suprise.

Emerton continued – “‘Obviously they’re a world-class team, one of the best in Europe. We’ll see what kind of team they put out.

‘We’ll have to see whether they rotate or if we do. But all we can do is prepare the best way possible.

‘We have to approach it in a positive manner. If you try and defend against that sort of quality then eventually they’ll break you down.

‘Hopefully we can try to be on the front foot and cause them some problems.

‘They pass and move the ball very well. On that day we sat back too deeply.

‘Hopefully we can get on the front foot and force some mistakes.”

I have actually got a funny feeling about Wednesday. I think we will follow what Brett says here.

We are expected to lose.

We are expected to be defensive.

So why the heck not go out and have a go? It’s a one off game… stranger things have happened.
