Chelsea Could Turn To Hughes?

Reports are suggesting that Chelsea could look to former star and current Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes should Jose Mourinho depart this summer.

These reports, by The Guardians Dominic Fifield claim that “senior figures” at Stamford Bridge have identified Hughes as a leading candidate to replace Mourinho, should he leave his post, as is expected at the end of the season.

The transformation that Hughes has performed at Ewood Park since taking over from Graeme Souness in September 2004 has been nothing short of miraculous, turning a relegation threatened side into a team that were challenging for a Champions League spot for a great deal of last season. At first he adopted a VERY physical approach as we were literally scrapping for our lives but has since phased in high quality, fast passed, often free flowing style of football, although we are still not afraid to put the boot in (almost always fairly of course!) if needed.

It would appear that the job Sparky has performed with Rovers has not gone unnoticed, with him often touted for the Manchester United job when Sir Alex Ferguson finally moves on, with Sir Alex himself giving his former player a seal of approval. Now, although whether this is true or not we’ll not know for a while maybe what he is achieving at Ewood Park has caught they eye of Roman Abramovic and Chelsea also?

Hughes is contracted to Rovers until 2009 (although what are contracts really worth these days!) with Mourinho contracted to Stamford Bridge until 2010 but paying up his contract (or compensation to Rovers for Hughes for that matter!) shouldn’t be a problem for Mr Abramovic.

Other people being linked with the post are Frank Rijkaard, Marcello Lippi and Guus Hiddink. Would Chelsea (if Mourinho does indeed leave) turn to Hughes ahead of these? It is thought that Abramovic wants to adopt a more British approach and cut out the lavish spending, in which case Hughes could very well be the man?

Would Hughes want to move on? I would like to think he would stay for a little longer yet and continue the job he has started, but should the chance of a return to Chelsea, with whom he had a very successful time as a player towards the end of his career come about the lure could prove too good to refuse.

Is this just tabloid rubbish (does The Guardian really print such things?!?!) or could it have some backbone to it? IF the chance arose would Hughes walk away from the job he’s started at Ewood Park or would he turn down a chance that maybe won’t come around again? Share your views below?
