Dann, Yak and Slew all reporting for duty

For the first time in living memory Rovers can actually say they played a productive part in transfer deadline day after making three new signings.

First through the door was the £6 million signing of Scott Dann from Birmingham. His arrival was expected but as usual with Rovers it took a bit longer than it should of.

But by 10 o’clock last night he was a Rover and he is now expected to slot straight into the centre of defence and at 24 is a cracking price for his age.

Hot on his heels was the £1.5 million signing of Yakubu from Everton. Not wanted by the Toffees but available for a decent fee, we have bought him in to add fire power to proceedings and he does have a decent goalscoring record… just don’t expect him to do much tracking back.

And finally the ‘potential’ singing arrived in the form of the incoming of Jordan Slew from Sheffield United. A 19 year old forward with pace and power – he is rated very highly by the Blades and for £1 million + add ons Rovers have signed the raw materials of a good player.

Further excellent news has come in the retention of man mountain Chris Samba. Chris has been expected to leave all summer by big sections of the media but he will stay at the club and keeping him at Rovers can be considered something of a success for Steve Kean and Venky’s.

Finally, El Hadji Diouf has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent ending a difficult spell at the club under Steve Kean.

The end of the window has seen Rovers make the following summer signings – Scott Dann, Simon Vukcevic, Jordan Slew, Yakubu, Radosav Petrovic, David Goodwillie and Bruno Ribeiro (Myles Anderson still doesn’t count).

The club still has some weaknesses but one of them is not the strength of the signings they have made – the above list looks like a very sensible summer shopping list even if we have been as frustrated at times.
