Blackburn striker Matt Derbyshire was a key figure in the Greek Cup final yesterday, netting twice for Olympiacos as they won an epic 15-14 penalty shoot out against AEK Athens.

And the local born Rovers player – on loan at Olympiacos for 6 months, has made himself a cult figure in Greece and with the local fans.

Derbyshire came on at half-time with his team 2-0 down and scored 2 to peg back the Athens side. His second of his two goals came really late to make the score 3-3 and force extra time.

And the England Under-21 international has put pressure on Sam to sort his long term future as soon as the season is over – with many Rovers fans perplexed as to where his long term future lies, as well as Matt himself.

Derbyshire, speaking to the Greek media after the game said – ‘If you’re asking me if I’d like to stay here then yes, of course,’

‘But it isn’t down to me it’s down to Blackburn Rovers and Olympiacos. I’m hopeful that something will happen. There haven’t been any talks at all at the moment.

‘Obviously I will have to wait until the end of the English season to see what happens with Blackburn and negotiations will hopefully start then.’

Sounds like he is having fun out there and it is good that he is making a name for himself but Sam would be a fool to sell him.

He is scoring regular goals for a Champions League side.
