Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Derbyshire opened his International account this afternoon on his England debut.

Derbyshire made his England under-21 debut in the friendly with Italy today and made an instant impact. Within minutes of coming on as a half time substitute his pass allowed Wayne Routledge to put England 2-1 ahead and then thirteen minutes into it his goal restored England’s lead to 3-2.

So David Bentley became the first Englishman to score at the new Wembley, Matt Derbyshire joined him in becoming one of the first goalscorers with his debut goal. That makes two of the first four goalscorers at England’s new home Blackburn Rovers players!

The highly entertaining game ended in a 3-3 draw with Giampaolo Pazzini (keep a look out for this name, quite some footballer!), scorer of the first goal at Wembley after less than sixty seconds going on to score a hat trick, obviously the first at the venue, the first at any Wembley since Paul Scholes in 1999.

Congratulations to David Bentley and Matt Derbyshire, I’m especially thrilled for Derbyshire as all the faith I’ve been putting in him (and in fairness others have also) for the most part of the season, even before he got his chance is being proved justified.
