A lot has been made of the Blackburn Rovers striking options, and how strong this department is (which it is!) which is making it difficult for some to get into the starting XI, Matt Derbyshire included.

However, even though some might view it as him slipping down the pecking order (which it isn’t!) Derbyshire is taking the VERY impressive stance (and showing great maturity) by seeing this as a chance to learn from the very best and bide his time, with patience being the most important thing.

Derbyshire told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I wouldn’t say I’d fallen behind in the pecking order. I’d say at the moment the guys have got their place, but working with them in training has been unbelievable, the likes of Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts, it’s not bad.

“All I can do is learn from these players and get better.

“At this moment in time, obviously I want to be starting and I can take the things I’ve learned from training into a game
.”

Derbyshire has a MASSIVE future (with Rovers and England) and HAS to make the most of having the likes of Benni McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz etc. to learn from, along with Mark Hughes, as he can learn so much from them.

  • Derbs has to learn from everyone he can, as they can ALL teach him so much.
When he gets his chance he has to come in and take it, which he (and others) will.

  • HDM’s boy is showing matureness way beyond his age. I really think he should be infront of roberts in the pecking order. Wat the heck, gallagher should be in front of roberts lol. Derbs should get a run against larissa, give benni one half and santa one half, or maybe even give rigters a run if the game is sealed. I would also like to see ollson given a run, warnock needs back up cause we will have a long season due to making the fa cup, league cup and uefa cup finals hehehehe

  • I can see Derbs and Rigters both playing the second leg, but Sparky will want to play it safe first with the first leg won’t he, no chances taken.
If Rovers do the job in the first leg then Martin Olsson could very well get his chance in the second leg, so Stevie W can be rested.
