Ex-Rovers boss and Championship winning manager Kenny Dalglish has warned Rovers to keep expectations in check and to not expect too much improvement on last season’s top half finish.

Rovers also reached a cup semi of the Carling variety (god I could kill for one of those right now!) and with a strong finish in April and May, the fans want Rovers to kick on.

Even the players have decided to have a crack at qualifying for Europe as well.

But Kenny Dalglish thinks that may be a bridge too far.

‘Big Sam did a fantastic job and they had no worries this year past December about staying up,’ King Kenny told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

‘But I just think that what he did last year was fantastic and I don’t think they should go too quickly. Just be grateful for what happened last year.

‘If they can kick on from there, then brilliant. I always hope that they’re going to do well.

‘Every club I’ve been at you want them to do well but Blackburn’s a wee bit special because of what we did, and the people there are fantastic people.

‘But I just think they’ve got to be a wee bit cautious. They did fantastically well and maybe punched a bit above their weight, but don’t have your expectations too high.

‘It’s hard for every club to move forward.

‘The next step up in the league is probably more difficult than the one below, because the competition is very strong.

‘I know one thing, though. It will not be for the lack of trying, because Sam will want to kick on.’

Fair comment I think but we are allowed to aim high aren’t we?!

  • I don’t think we could get much higher in the league.. without more spending power.. but I would quite like a cup final in the next 2 seasons..

  • Over the last decade we’ve not once been fancied to get into Europe.. yet we’ve managed to do so on sumerous occasions. We had no money then and we have no money now. So.. and with the greatest respect to King Kenny… who’s to say it cant be done again?

  • ahem, blackpool anyone? be optimistic! we can win this league! personally i cant see a reason why we shouldnt aim for at least 7 – 8. we are a solid stable trading club this summer.

  • But back when we did Pompey, Newcastle etc did have plenty of money…. (well Pompey spent it like they did)

  • Does’nt make a huge difference 23.. anyone can beat anyone in this league. Villa are owned by a billionaire.. did’nt stop us doing the double over them.. did it?
