Shane Duffy’s departure from Blackburn has been confirmed with the former Everton defender joining Championship rivals Brighton.

Duffy’s future at Ewood Park had been in serious doubt all summer with various Championship clubs linked with him and Celtic mentioned with the Republic of Ireland international for a while after some impressive performances at Euro 2016.

He’s left Blackburn, which seemed all the more likely when he turned down a new deal earlier in the month with his existing deal expiring at the end of the season, for an undisclosed fee.

This fee is said to be in the region of £4m with him signing a four-year deal at Brighton, ending his two-year spell with Blackburn having played 69-matches and scored seven-goals the last of those being the extra time winner against Crewe in the League Cup in midweek.

Duffy’s last league match for Blackburn ended in disaster as he scored two own goals (his third of the season) and got sent off in a two-one defeat at Cardiff, which saw Owen Coyle question his mindset at the time.

Losing Grant Hanley to Newcastle was difficult enough but losing Duffy too makes Blackburn significantly weaker defensively but in fairness if he wasn’t going to sign a new deal Rovers couldn’t let him walk away for nothing next summer so it’s a good deal for the club if this money is reinvested into it….
