Dunn Considered Quitting!

David Dunn is delighted to be back at Ewood Park but has revealed how he considered quitting the beautiful game.

With a history of well documented problems (on and off the field) after a series of injuries and problems within his personal life, Dunn has revealed how he contemplated calling time on his playing career during his time with Birmingham City:

I’ve had three years almost out of football – stop, start all the time. It was frustrating getting in a position where I was playing really well then I’d pick an injury up,” said Dunn, when speaking in the Daily Express.

I was playing well one Christmas and we played Middlesbrough – there was lots of talk about Stewart Downing for England. There’d been talk I could push my way back into the England reckoning but I did my hamstring again.

It did go through my mind where I thought, maybe this isn’t for me. I don’t want to be going through all this again.

I don’t know if it was the travelling – there were more important things than football for me. I was a little bit homesick. My family and my little girl were up here so I was coming up three times a week – it was killing me really.

It crossed my mind quite a few times when I was on my own in my flat in Birmingham that I didn’t want to carry on. I felt there must be other things out there for me. I reckoned I’d be a great bus driver with the amount of times I had been up and down the M6.”

If Dunn could be as good a bus driver as he is a footballer then I’d have no qualms about getting on a bus being driven by him, but thankfully for Rovers sake, and football as a whole he decided to stick to his day job.

Whilst the former England International it delighted to be back and settled at Ewood Park, playing regular football again after his injury nightmares, he does feel the pressure of expectation a little.

The returning hero also said:

I’m just happy to be injury free and putting performances in, but fans want you to take off where you left off.

I think there’s a bit of pressure on me, especially with being a local lad. When you’ve been out so long your awareness goes, but that’s match fitness as much as anything. I’m sure it will come. I think next season, with a good pre-season, I will be able to push on.”
