Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are two of four new Under 23 sides to enter the EFL Trophy for the coming season.

Following on from last year’s trial that saw 16 Category A clubs from the Premier League and Championship enter the Trophy competition, with a further boost in Premier League cash pumped in as prize money, EFL clubs decided to continue with the new format.

As the season nears this year Academy sides from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Fulham come in as four new sides and they join Brighton, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Reading, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United as the invited sides.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool again declined the chance to participate.

With low attendances and a criticism about the rules, well the rules have been relaxed this year for League One and Two clubs but whether the fans will get on board this year remains to be seen.
