Sven Goran Eriksson looked certain to take over as Blackburn Rovers manager in the late 1990s, before having a change of heart and taking over Lazio instead.

The former England manager, who is now manager of Sunday’s Premiership opponents Manchester City had held talks with Rovers over the vacant job at Ewood Park, and had even signed a contract to accept the job but a late change of heart saw him tell Rovers legendary former owner Sir Jack Walker that he had changed his mind and wanted to go to Italy and Lazio instead, he even offered to pay the club compensation.

Many would have reacted VERY angrily, but not Uncle Jack, as Eriksson has revealed to the media: “I had signed a contract with Blackburn and phoned up Jack Walker and asked if it was possible to change my mind.

“I met him twice in England and Italy and told him I was prepared to pay compensation.

“He took the contract, did this (ripped it up) and said we would be friends forever.

“I do not feel bad about it. It happened many years ago.

“The first time I went back to Blackburn in my previous job, I wondered what people might say. But nothing happened
.”
