John O’Sullivan’s not had much of a Blackburn Rovers chance since his debut against Birmingham City (and was close to joining Barnsley last month after a successful loan with Accrington Stanley), however, his future’s been secured.

This time last month I wouldn’t have thought O’Sullivan would still be at Ewood Park let alone having signed a new contract but this is what happened earlier this week when he agreed to stay until the end of next season.

O’Sullivan’s been with Rovers since his was fifteen and said (after signing the contract) that he was “delighted to stay” with the ongoing talks eventually successful with a first-team place (with Rovers) something he’s after, however, another loan away is likely firstly.

He told The Official Website: “Talks have been ongoing for a few weeks, but everything has fallen into place now and I’m glad to be here for another 18 months.

“The plan is to hopefully get out on loan, if possible to a League One team, but even if I do I’ll still be thinking about putting thoughts in the manager’s mind and pushing for a place here. That’s why I’ve signed this extension, because I think I have a real chance of playing at Blackburn in the future”

“I just need to show the gaffer that I’m good enough and if I do go back out on loan, then hopefully that’s what I’ll do.

A loan with Southport last season saw him impress so it wasn’t a surprise that John Coleman took his to Accrington Stanley at the beginning of the season, with his form at The Crown Ground earning him a Rovers recall but Gary Bowyer’s not used the twenty-one-year-old as yet.

This new contract (even though we would’ve got compensation given his age) removes the risk of losing the Republic of Ireland Under-21 International in the summer but if his first-team chance doesn’t come soon you can’t see it coming at all can you?? Next season has to be the real breakthrough one for the midfielder.
