Former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Andreas Arestidou has joined Shrewsbury Town on a FREE Transfer following his release by Rovers.

The goalkeeper (who was one of soooo many that we’ve had at Ewood Park in recent years) had been with Rovers since he was 11-years-old but was one of those that Sam Allardyce decided to let go. However, he has now joined the League Two side after passing a medical and completing the required paperwork. Arestidou learned a lot during his time at Ewood but is looking forward to his time with Shrewsbury.

Arestidou told The Official Shrewsbury Town Website: ““I grew up in Morecambe and got picked up by Blackburn when I was 11 years of age and I’d been there ever since.

“It was a good club to be at and I got a lot of experience during my time there. The people there were really good to me and helped me to progress a lot as a player.

“The problem is that every club is looking for experience in the first team and I think at times there were about 5 keepers ahead of me. That means the games are shared around in the reserves and it was hard to get my chance.

The former England Under-16 and Under-17 International isn’t going to be around completely unfamiliar faces as another former Rovers youngster Jake Simpson will also be at Shrewsbury with him after he also signing for Shrewsbury (their manager Paul Simpson is Jake’s Father.)

He added: “I played with the Gaffer’s son at Blackburn Rovers and he would have seen me play a few times in that side.

“With Jake being at the club already it will be a little easier to settle down and get involved with everyone else.

Rovers have had to many goalkeepers in recent years so not all of them are needed even though I’ve heard good things about Arestidou, personally I’d be more disappointed to see Frank Fielding move on as Fielding is a goalkeeper that Brad Friedel ALWAYS rated very highly and that’s good enough for me!!!
