Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune is set to have a trial with Blackburn Rovers, according to Sunderland manager Roy Keane.

Former South African International skipper Fortune has been without a club since his release by Bolton Wanderers last summer. He has recently been on trial with Sunderland, and was expected to sign for them, however, Keane decided upon signing his former Man United team-mate and claims that Mark Hughes is now prepared to take a look at the free agent.

Keane is quoted as saying: “Quinton is a great lad but, in the position we are in, I think it would be unfair to bring in player who hasn’t played for six, seven or eight months.

“We did that with Andy Cole and Ian Harte earlier in the season, but at this stage of the campaign anyone we bring in needs to be able to hit the ground running.

“I think Quinton might now spend some time with Blackburn and we wish him well
.”

Should Fortune indeed arrive on trial, if he impressed Hughes he would be able to sign immediately as he is a free agent.
