Brad Friedel agreed to extend his contract with Blackburn Rovers, seeing him through until 2009 for the simple reason, the club are going places and have a bright future.

Amidst the furore of the devastating and valiant FA Cup Semi Final defeat to Chelsea, the fact that Friedel signed a one-year contract extension, seeing him through to 2009 (at least) may have gone unnoticed? Many of us here haven’t missed this though as we discussed our views on him being one of the very best in the Premiership.

Friedel believes, as we all do that Rovers are going somewhere, if he didn’t believe this he wouldn’t have extended his contract. Although European football looks out of reach now Friedel is insistent we will not give up without a fight and must finish the season on a positive note, not go out on a whimper suffering a post-cup hangover.

Friedel said:

I would not have wanted to re-sign if I did not think this club could go on.

We gave Chelsea more than a game. They just happened to get a break in extra-time.

We have also had our best run ever in Europe. I know what the staff is like behind closed doors. They are very professional and want to make the club bigger and better.

Our league position at the moment has a lot to do with the injuries we had at the beginning of the season and the amount of games we had to contend with.

We have 18 points left to play for and we can take them. We are not going to let the season die out. We are too professional for that.

I know, if we finish on a positive note, the club will be generous to the coaching staff in the summer. We will be able to bring in a few more players.”

We must now pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and start with three points against Watford at Ewood Park on Wednesday night if we are to have ANY chance, however unlikely it may be of sneaking into Europe next season. Matches with Watford, Fulham and Charlton consecutively look good on paper and as such could give us a good start but we all know how we have struggled against teams of this ilk this season?
