Frustrating Draw Like A Defeat

Blackburn were on course for a crucial win over promotion rivals Wigan on Sunday. However, the Latics came back from two-down to secure a 2-2 draw at Ewood Park – a result that left Tony Mowbray feeling as if a defeat had been suffered.

It couldn’t have been a better start for Blackburn as on-loan Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong’s opener on just six minutes was followed up by Elliott Bennett’s second in successive games to leave Rovers in complete control on 17 minutes.

Wigan began their fightback just past the hour when Michael Jacobs got the better of David Raya. The Blackburn goalkeeper was beaten again when the brilliantly named Max Power curled in a freekick on 73 minutes.

Had this lead been held the League One title would be very much in sight, as it is Blackburn are five points clear of second placed Shrewsbury and six ahead of Wigan, albeit with the Latics having several games in hand.

Yes, it was frustrating for Mowbray, but the boss still feels there were some positives to take from it.

‘We’re frustrated today, it feels like a defeat. I thought we showed our quality and class in the first half and have to take the positives from that. We’re a really good side and have to see this season out now, we have to win matches to get to our target so let`s see how we go,’ Mowbray told the Official Website.

Adding: ‘We can’t do anything about today’s game now, it’s frustrating but there were some great moments and we scored two great goals. If anything, it was a difficult game because it was so stop-start, but never mind. It was an interesting one for the neutral I’m sure but a frustrating one for us because we didn’t take all three points when we deserved them.’

Mowbray finished by saying he wasn’t angry with the players but was disappointed with the goals conceded as they ‘were really poor’ and the team needs to ‘get better defensively.’

A point probably would have been taken ahead of the game, but Mowbray’s right really isn’t he, having held such a commanding lead, letting this slip does make it feel like a defeat.

However, this result keeps Wigan at arm’s length and as the cliché goes, points on the board are better than games in hand.
