If you had the money of a Roman Abramovich and even a time machine I’m sure you would love to put together a Blackburn Rovers Greatest Ever Squad? This is your chance as we continue compiling this squad with the centre-backs!

We all have our favourite players and know of the legendary ones even if we haven’t seen them so now is our chance to get these brought together as you the Vital Blackburn Rovers fans get a chance to compile what you consider the Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad.

This squad will comprise of the following, with the goalkeepers and left-backs already selected:

3 Goalkeepers (Tim Flowers, Brad Friedel & Bobby Mimms)

2 Left-backs (or Wing-backs) (Stig Inge Bjornebye & Graeme Le Saux)
2 Right-backs (or Wing-backs)
4 Centre-backs

2 Left-midfielders (or Wingers)
2 Right-midfielders (or Wingers)
4 Central Midfielders

4 Forwards

To put together this squad we need to think of names so below leave your suggestion for the CENTRE-BACK or CENTRE-BACKS you would like to be considered for selection.

Once we have enough names (at least five, ideally six) we will put it to the vote and the top four will make it into the Greatest Ever Rovers Squad.

Should you suggest more than six centre-backs I will either have to consider those most frequently suggested or somehow get you to decide on the final six people voted on? JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONS A PLAYER DON’T THINK YOU CAN’T AS YOU CAN the more mentions a player gets the better his chance of making the poll!

This is your chance so post your centre-back or centre-backs names below. Why not also post a word or two on why you have selected them?

  • Rovers have a RICH, RICH history of central defenders so there sohuld be PLENTY of names suggested here! As always I’ll leave it to you guys first then add my thoughts as we go.

  • I’d have to agree Hendry is the best , followed by Nelsen at the min, I dont think many will come close to these two, although there are many great names as said

  • I don’t usually come in this early but for a change I will. Colin Hendry and Ryan Nelsen would be names I’d certainly mention. Mike England and Henchoz would get a mention too.

  • The obvious nominations for me have to include Hendry (Should we just give him a bye? 😉 ) Nelsen, Henchoz and Berg. Anyone dare mention Darren Peacock? Hehe.

  • Oh, does Ian Pearce class as a striker or defender for us? One of our forgotten ones if you ask me – Premiership winner with us, and one of the ones that no-one ever seems to mention. Certainly proved his worth against Barcelona.

  • Henning Berg is another that I will certainly agree with. Didn’t want to mention him until someone else did. As for Ian Pearce he would be classed as a defender in this, he certainly is a forgotten man so maybe he could get in. Darren Peacock could probably get into another selection of Rovers players but it certainly wouldn’t be the greatest!

  • Anyone out there remember Graham Hawkins,he went on to manage Wolves, and what about Derek Fazakerley,if he could have passed a football he would have been an England centre half.Ryan Nelson puts me in mind of both the above, class.

  • Derek Fazackerley would be another name I’d have put forward if no one else had, so I’ll just back the selection boddingtonblue.

  • Although I agree with this idea wholeheartedly Hughesy, I still get the distinct thought that this team will be made up of lets face it players from the last 10years…….. a real shame I think for a club that spans a history since 1875! I realise its a hard one to call when you either don’t remember/never seen the older players ply their trades for the Blue & Whites so far I think the oldest player mentioned is Big Col! (whom I would include without doubt but there should be more to be given consideration) Stig? was he really a Rovers great? if in any doubt check this link it will give you all the info you need

  • A TRUE ROVERS GREAT IN MY HUMBLE OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BORN, PLAYED FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY AND EVEN MANAGED….. Roll on the Right backs…………………..Robert ‘Bob’ Crompton (26th September 1879 – 16th March 1941) was a former Blackburn Rovers F.C. and England football player. He captained England 22 times between 1903 and 1914 and was capped 41 times.

Born in Blackburn, Crompton spent his entire career at full-back for Blackburn Rovers, playing 528 games between 1896 and 1920. He won the league twice as captain of the team in 1912 and 1914. He later went on to manage Blackburn between 1926 and 1930, leading them to the FA Cup victory over Huddersfield in 1928. Crompton then returned as manager in the late thirties to guide them to the Second division Championship.

  • Harold Michael England MBE ………..Sound familiar……..? was a popular Welsh footballer and manager. He played as a commanding centre-half for Blackburn Rovers F.C. (1959-1966). He then went on to manage Wales in 1979

  • This is why I’ve left it open for people to come in and out at a latter date. This site is still in its infancy so as it grows opinions will probably be more widespread and not all the “newer” players will be in. I’d agree who heartidly with Stig, but what can you do Bill Ek or Keith Newton (who I actually voted for) SHOULD have also got in.

  • Harold Michael England MBE or just plain Mike England as he is better know already has my mention and should have a VERY good chance of at least making the vote! with four from six places up for grabs should get in. As for the legend that is Bob Crompton you can’t have a greatest ever without him!!! He’ll be a shoe in as one of the two right-back’s making the squad.

  • How can you vote for someone you never saw play.I remember seeing Bill Ekersley ashes being scattered at the left back position he played in,on Ewood Park.A one club man,but Icould not vote for him,cos i never saw him play.

  • Legends or Greats are just that because they are just that and as such deserve the title don’t they? Having not seem them in the flesh doesn’t change this does it? I never saw Pele, George Best, Bobby Moore etc play personally (only in footage) yet I’d still vote for them as all time greats of the game so why should this be any different? OK maybe I should rephase, maybe you don’t have to vote on them per say but at least they deserve a mention?

  • Hendry definately. Nelsen is moulding himself as the new Hendyhero at Ewood. Others worthy of mention in my opinion are Berg, Fazackerley, Moran

  • Also a sneaky mention for a player who was never the greatest in the world but was a model professional who always gave 110%. He was an honest and stout defender who proved to be a formidable force with Berg……..Craig Short

  • I seriously doubt Gomaa will be anything more than cover for the first team and a PR stunt!!! Still I’m looking forward to his arrival

  • Shorty escaped mine too as he just got on whith it didn’t he! Gomaa won’t arrive, I can’t say 100% but I can’t see it now.
