With Ryan Nelsen struggling to overcome his injury worries and likely to be sidelined for the foreseeable future Mark Hughes is keen to reinforce the Blackburn Rovers back line with a former Ewood Park star set to return.

Switzerland International Stephane Henchoz, who turned 32-years-old on Thursday is reportedly set to return to the club.

Henchoz first arrived in England in 1997; being signed by former Rovers boss Roy Hodgson, himself having previously been in charge of the Swiss national side. His consistently high levels of performance alerted Liverpool and a move to Anfield would take place in 1999.

A highly successful six-year stint at Anfield would end when new Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez decided Henchoz wasn’t for him. Short spells with Celtic and Wigan Athletic followed before his release by Wigan in the summer.

With Henchoz being a free agent, despite the fact that the transfer window has now closed Hughes, who is said to be a keen admirer of the defender, will be able to bring in the defender immediately.

A deal until 2007 is said to have been agreed, whether or not this is the summer of 2007 or merely January I’m not sure, although I would say the latter more likely at this stage.

Henchoz’s re-arrival, which has now been confirmed is likely to signal the end to his former Liverpool teammate Dominic Matteo’s time at Ewood Park, at least in the short term, as a loan move is looking increasingly likely. His links with his previous club Leeds United are growing stronger with each passing day.

Meanwhile former Rovers defender Vratislav Gresko has completed a move to Nurmberg.

The Slovakian International, released by Hughes in the summer has signed a one-year deal with the German side, with the option of a second following a trial period earlier in the week.

29-year-old Gresko struggled with injuries during his time at Ewood Park and following his contract expiring in June, with Michael Gray at the time the preferred left sided defender, and with other people ahead of Gresko in the pecking order, Hughes decided to release the left-back.

Good luck Gresko.
