How on earth did Blackburn lose?

How on earth Blackburn Rovers failed to claim at least a point from the match with Bolton Wanderers on Sunday I’ll probably never know! Even only a point would have been arguably less than we deserved.

We dominated the match for large periods, had well over 60% of the possession, created enough chances with efforts on goal to win several games, failed to be given a goal that seemed over the line, had two penalties not given that probably should have been and even missed two others!

So instead of increasing our unbeaten run with at the very least a point we somehow managed to lose the game. Mark Hughes felt we were more than worth at least a point and had we won we would have more than deserved it.

Speaking to Sky Sports Hughes said:

The two penalties at the end of the game should have won it for us, but, even before that, certainly in the first half, I thought some of our play was as good as we have played this year.

We were unfortunate not to get any reward – we thought there was a genuine goal not given when the ball was clearly over the line.

We had another penalty which was maybe a stronger claim than the ones we had at the end.

But overall I can’t be too disappointed, I thought the players played extremely well, and it’s always difficult against Bolton if you lose a goal and we switched off at a corner.

They’re very adept at protecting the lead and hitting you on the break so overall it was a good performance, but we didn’t get the break when we needed it.”

Hopefully this disappointment can be put behind us when we take on Chelsea in the third round of the Carling Cup on Wednesday evening before getting back to Premiership action against a struggling West Ham United at Upton Park on Sunday.
