Blackburn Rovers Boss Mark Hughes backed David Bentley’s decision to pull out of the England Squad for the European Under-21 Championships at the time; he is doing it again (and more) now.

Bentley pulled out at the last minute due to fears he may suffer from fatigue during the 2007-2008 season if he didn’t, as a result Rovers’ Player of the Year was heavily criticised by Stuart Pearce (and many others) for consequently leaving the Squad a player down.

Obviously Hughes backed him at the time, and is doing so again saying how disappointed he was at the reaction he received, and is also hoping that the withdrawal will NOT hinder his chances of a Senior International call-up this season if it is merited.

Sparky told the Mirror:

I was disappointed with the reaction of the management of England in questioning his decision and whether or not it has placed a question mark over him at senior level.

“We told them if he had a break it would benefit not just ourselves, but the England group as well.

“If he becomes an option for senior selection, like he did last season, then I hope people don’t hold it against him. He’ll play as well as last year, if not even better, and he’s already looking sharper
