Blackburn Rovers fans, and club officials (including Manager Mark Hughes) were left worrying over the state of star striker Benni McCarthy when he was stretchered off in the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough.

The South African was replaced by Roque Santa Cruz (who promptly equalised before Matt Derbyshire also scored as a substitute to turn deficit into victory Middlesbrough) after collapsing following a bang on the head. After five minutes of treatment on the pitch he was stretchered off in a neck brace and taken to hospital.

A long-term injury to McCarthy (or anyone else) was the last thing that Rovers wanted, especially on the opening day of the season and thankfully it appears that things are NOT too serious, with word soon filtering back to Hughes that McCarthy was going to be OK.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “We’ve got word that he is ok when I was in the dressing room,’ said Hughes after the game.

“Obviously there was a concern when he went off, I think everybody saw that after the initial impact he was able to walk away but then he passed out I think.

“So there was genuine concern once a player has been taken off on a stretcher with his neck in a brace, but thankfully we feel that he’s ok

  • Seeing ANYONE stretchered off, especially in a neck brace is a worry no matter who they are but if they are your main striker it is EVEN MORE alarming.
Personally I would not expect to see him play the next couple of games (at least) but this will be better than several months isn’t it!!!

  • Glad to hear he’ll be fine. After Santa Cruz performance today, I can’t wait to see these two playing along-side each other

  • This is good news. My heart was in my mouth when I saw it…

I’m glad he is well and nut all… you said it right mate. Derbyshire continues to be amazing.

  • When he went down, then after SOOO much treatment for so long, being carried off on a strecther DIDN’T look good. Thanksfully though someone is smiling down on Rovers and it isn’t too serious (he just wanted the attention didn’t he lol!!!)
