Mark Hughes has confessed that his job at Blackburn Rovers is more “stimulating” and “enjoyable” than his spell in charge of the Welsh National side.

His first taste of management came with Wales and although he enjoyed his time very much he admitted over the weekend that club management, with its day-in-day out involvement is more enjoyable. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek Hughes said:

Both jobs, obviously, are very difficult. They are similar in some respects, but completely different in others.”

When you are working on a day-to-day basis, you have the players you know you are going to work with and you are able to mould them and form them into the team you have a vision for.”

Hughes, who enjoyed a two-year spell with Rovers as a player between 2000 and 2002 as his career came to an end, making 50 appearances seeing him score only 6 goals although he did pick up a League Cup winner medal in his final game.

Hughes who would return to Ewood as Manager in 2004, would go on to say:

In international football, it is sometimes like throwing all the ingredients into a pot and them hoping something comes out that is edible for everybody.”

It is a difficult job, international football. You do not get many opportunities to have and impact and the games come around and you have got to get points on the board.”

Club football is a difficult job, but it is stimulating and there are so many facets to it that on a day-to-day basis, it`s more enjoyable.”

In an International career spanning fifteen years between 1984 and 1999 he would win 72 caps with Wales, scoring 16 goals. Hughes took over the national team boss in 1999 whilst with Southampton as a player, he would carry on playing until 2002, with Everton in 2000 and of course Rovers until he retired, then turning his attention purely to Wales.
