Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has conceded that Liverpool deserved their 3-1 win at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, but highlighted individual errors as being highly costly.

Liverpool took the lead through Steven Gerrard in the second half after a series of errors allowed the England International in and he made no mistake slotting past a helpless Brad Friedel. Fernando Torres capitalised on another defensive mistake to make it two with Andriy Voronin scoring the third at the end before Roque Santa Cruz’s injury time consolation. It was the errors and lack of attacking threat that left Hughes fuming; however, he did admit that Rovers didn’t do enough to warrant getting anything from the match.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “Liverpool didn’t really put us under any concerted pressure during that opening period.

“But in the second half we came out and felt there was something in the game for us, but the first goal is poor from our point of view, we had chances to address the situation and nip it in the bud, but we allowed poor passes and mis-timed challenges to allow Steven Gerrard through, and one-on-one with the keeper you always suspect that he is going to take the chance which he obviously did.

“In fairness to Liverpool today I thought they worked extremely hard and closed down spaces and as a consequence they force errors and they are able to convert the chances as the consequence of those errors, and that is what happened with the last two goals, which I didn’t think gave a true reflection on the game.

“But at the end of the day we haven’t done enough going the other way to deserve something out of the game
.”

The defeat just about ends the UEFA Cup hopes that we might have had, even the Intertoto Cup is now looking a struggle but Sparky is adamant that Rovers WILL keep going.

He added: “But we’ll keep going, we’ve got four games left and we are still trying to achieve something and that is a credit to us, but today we just didn’t quite have enough to test Liverpool.”
