Following Harry Redknapp’s surprising rejection for the Newcastle job, Mark Hughes has emerged as front runner for the bookies to succeed Sam Allardyce at St James’ Park.

Speaking after Blackburn’s last minute 2-1 win over Bolton at the Reebok Stadium, Hughes says he’s flattered by the interest shown in him and says it reflects positively on his current club’s progress after more than three years at Ewood Park.

However the Rovers boss stops short of saying he is interested, as his name seems to crop up every time a so called ‘top job’ becomes available.

Hughes signed a new contract back in October amid speculation Tottenham were after him following Martin Jol’s sacking.

  • Guardian website seems to suggest that he doesn’t rule himself out:

“Asked to end speculation by announcing he would be staying at Blackburn, Hughes, who said he had not had any contact with Newcastle and did not believe his chairman, John Williams, had been approached, replied: “That’s a hypothetical question and I don’t answer hypothetical questions. It’s not in my hands; it’s in the chairman’s hands. I’m proud to be Blackburn Rovers’ manager [but] in football you can never say never.” ”

  • Souness has not even been linked with us, he wants to return to Newcastle, Sparky wont leave, if he does though, would be really interesting, who would we snap up? Sam Allardyce? Maybe even Jose Mourinho lollll, Sparky aint leaving….

  • Souness BACK to Newcastle!!! It’s NEVER going to happen dude, nor would a return here if Sparky left (which he wont’t) SURELY!
