Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has said that he and the players are “desperately disappointed” following their final day defeat at St Andrews.

If Rovers were disappointed Birmingham City must have been heartbroken as even their 4-1 win wasn’t enough to keep them in the Premier League following Fulham’s draw. Rovers knew that a victory was a must to gain sixth place, and a route into the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto Cup next season, seventh wasn’t enough.

Hughes told Sky Sports: “I’m desperately disappointed.

“We’re seventh in the Premier League but we’re sat in the dressing room beating ourselves up.

“We’d worked exceptionally hard for that Intertoto place but we can’t do anything about it now.

“We needed to win the game and needed to get all three points. We got ragged and lost focus and let Birmingham take the game.

However, Hughes is remaining upbeat about the future and is still VERY pleased with how the 2007-2008 season went as a whole.

He added: “It’s a bit raw at the moment,’ he added. ‘I don’t like getting beaten at the best of times and not under those circumstances.

“But we’ll get over it in a few weeks and look forward to next season. We’ve been delighted with the season.

“We’ll pat ourselves on the back for the season but not for today
.”
