With Blackburn Rovers coming face to face with summer target Mido in our meeting with Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow it was always likely his failed transfer to Ewood Park would crop up? and it has!

Rovers boss Mark Hughes has revealed that the Egyptian International, having previously been on a year and a half’s loan at Spurs before returning to Italian club Roma in the summer, priced himself out of a move to Ewood.

Mido has somewhat of a history of being a temperamental and difficult footballer to handle, the fact that he has played for so many teams in so many different countries already during his footballing career proves testament to this.

Having tried all he could to land the hitman, tracking him for most of the summer Hughes finally lost patience with the 23-year-old striker:

We spent lot of time pursuing Mido. In the end, it was probably too much time, and it came to a point where we had to walk away from it“, said Hughes.

After flying out for a face to face meeting with Mido in Italy, despite the club coming close to signing Mido Hughes called time on the negotiations, Sparky added:

On occasions, I thought we were very close but, for whatever reason, it didn’t happen.

It was difficult – probably one of the most difficult transfers I’ve ever been involved in.

I went out there to meet him, we came close, but it wasn’t to be, and these things happen.

The negotiations just went on and on and, in the end, we felt it wouldn’t have reached the conclusion we wanted.”

So Hughes instead snapped up South African Benni McCarthy, with whom he is more than happy with (as are we!) then a few weeks later as we all know Mido, having declared his intent to remain with Roma made the surprise switch back to White Hart Lane with his permanent transfer to Spurs. Hughes also said:

I’m happy enough with the guys I was able to bring into the club.

But I’m sure he’s happy with how it panned out for him, and I think we are happy as well.”

Everything worked out for the best for everyone really I guess, although the fact so much time was spent tracking one man to replace Craig Bellamy proved to Rovers cost ultimately as strengthening in other areas, particularly midfield could not be achieved?
