Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was pleased with another Rovers win, although he admits he was surprised at how “rampant” Rovers were in the first half against Reading on Saturday.

Hughes told Sky Sports: “To be three goals up at half-time is something of a rarity for me, I don’t think I have had the experience of going in at half-time 3-0 up, but I quite enjoyed it.”

Goals from Benni McCarthy, Roque Santa Cruz (who was able to make a miraculous recovery from injury) and Tugay with what looked a screamer, however, Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann probably could and should have done better, saw Rovers in 3-0 lead at half time. McCarthy added a fourth from the penalty spot in the second half as Rovers ran out eventual 4-2 winners, something that delighted Hughes.

He added: “I thought we were excellent in the first half. Some of our play was really inventive, certainly in the final third.

“Our interplay, our rotation of positions and the way we moved the ball quickly gave Reading a real problem at times and I thought they found it hard to cope at times.”

“We were never in danger of losing the game
.”

The one down side for Sparky though was the fact that two goals were conceded, but even then he couldn’t really have been that unhappy as the result was never in doubt was it.

  • Rovers REALLY are in fine form aren’t they, the UEFA Cup departure has been handled with in the right way and maybe it could even be a blessing in disguise as David Dunn had said recently?!?!

  • I dont think Hughes will be snapped up until he actually achieves something, ie, top 4 finish, cup victory, etc. Ferguson, Wenger, Benitez are safe, Grant? well who knows what will happen there, i just dont see Hughesy leaving anytime soon

  • i cant wiat for spurs now it’ll be nice to look down our noses at them! but we looked really good yeasterday- benni is hittin top form again santa cruz looks better and better every week our options are amazin im gettin excited just thinkin bout it C’MON ROVERS!

  • When Sir Alex finally does call it a day I think we will lose Sparky but not before. Liverpool could lose patience with Benitez’s rotation, but I’d doubt it?!?! Sparky is manure bound eventually though for me.

  • Yeah, I can’t WAIT for the Spurs debate to begin, I wonder if they will be so quick to belittle Rovers this time round?!?!

  • sasman – Tugay’s goals was awesome, but the Reading goalkeeper could have done better couldn’t he?!?! Or am i doing the Maestro an injustice, did it just deceive him because it was so good???

  • We’d be that quick to belittle Barcelona, if you think an 11 league position difference will stop us you’re sorely mistaken! You guys keep churning out the wins in the League, you?re surely now one of the most feared teams left in the UEFA cup lol. Let battle commence!

  • phartman its gas you wont win the uefa cup stop dreamin if you cant defend corners set pieces or any cross into the box for that matter what chance have you really? “we’d be that quick to belittle barcelona” says it all really deluded! this is fun!
