Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was thrilled with Rovers’ 2-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

Sunderland are not AT ALL the whipping boys that many might have thought, so to come away with a point wouldn’t have been a bad result, but all three was superb. After the back-to-back UEFA Cup and Premiership defeats recently, Rovers returned to winning ways in the Carling Cup and followed this up with another win in the Premiership (the 2-1 on Saturday), with Hughes pleased with how we have responded to those defeats.

Hughes told Sky Sports (quotes were taken from and article their anyway): “We had a little stumble last week with the result in Europe and the defeat at home to Portsmouth.

“We had a good performance in the cup and today I thought we were excellent. We caused them problems and in the end we could have scored more
.”

On the win at Sunderland (which as said is a VERY good result) he was pleased, apart from the late goal conceded, he added: “I was a bit disappointed with the goal in the end because we want clean sheets. It’s a while since we’ve been beaten away from home and we were pleased with the performance.

“The important thing today was we didn’t give them encouragement. We kept the ball well and they always seemed to be on the back foot. We created some good chances, broke quickly and we could have been more comfortable
.”

The win, following goals from David Bentley and Roque Santa Cruz sees Rovers up to sixth place in the Premiership, so we are still quietly going about our business, but we are starting to be noticed.
